چکیده

The microstructure of granular materials is the main factor determining their macroscopic behaviour. We study systematically the statistical characteristics of volume elements (called quadrons) of microstructures of monoand polydisperse planar disc packs granular and report a number of new results. The packs analysed were of different intergranular friction coefficients ,μ , contained about 20,000 discs each and were brought to mechanical equilibrium under identical isotropic compression stresses from three different initial states: loose, intermediate and dense. Our findings are the following. (i) The rattlers volume fraction φr is not affected by the disc size distribution (DSD). (ii) Excluding the rattlers, we find that the relation between the packing fraction φ ′ and the mean coordination number z̄ is independent of the initial state. Together with result (i), this allows us to separate the effects of the DSD and the initial state on the microstructure. (iii) We relate analytically z̄, φ ′ and the (normalised) mean quadron volume v̄′. (iv) Combining (iii) and a relation between z̄ and the mean cell order, ē, derived from Euler’s topological relation, we show that (ii) is a result of the geometrical relation between v̄′ and ē. (v) The probability density function of the quadron volumes, normalised by v̄′, is universal for all the studied systems and it can be fit reasonably well by a Γ distribution.

Magnetism and Giant Magneto-Transport Properties in Granular Solids

Magnetic granular solids consist of nanometer-sized magnetic particles uniformly dispersed and embedded in an immiscible insulating or metallic medium. They display a rich variety of magnetic properties and giant magneto-transport properties due to their unique nanostructure, which can be usefully described by the metal volume fraction and the metal particle diameter of granular solids. Fabrica...

Linear Elasticity of Planar Delaunay Networks: Random Field Characterization of Effective Moduli

A study is conducted of the influence of microscale geometric and physical randomness on effective moduli of a continuum approximation of disordered microstruetures. A particular class of microstructures investigated is that of planar Delaunay networks made up of linear elastic rods connected by joints. Three types of networks are considered: Delaunay networks with random geometry and random sp...

On Phase Transition and Self-Organized Critical State in Granular Packings

We model two-dimensional systems of granular aggregates confined between two planes and demonstrate that at a critical grain volume fraction an abrupt rigidity transition occurs. This transition is observed both in static and shear tests. The grain volume fraction at which the transition occurs, νc, decreases with increasing friction between the grains. Densely packed grains, with a volume frac...

From elasticity to hypoplasticity: dynamics of granular solids.

"Granular elasticity," useful for calculating static stress distributions in granular media, is generalized by including the effects of slowly moving, deformed grains. The result is a hydrodynamic theory for granular solids that agrees well with models from soil mechanics.

Fluctuations in shear-jammed states: A statistical ensemble approach

Granular matter exists out of thermal equilibrium, i.e. it is athermal. While conventional equilibrium statistical mechanics is not useful for characterizing granular materials, the idea of constructing a statistical ensemble analogous to its equilibrium counterpart to describe static granular matter was proposed by Edwards and Oakshott more than two decades ago. Recent years have seen several ...
